Apple Releases Another Revised AirTag Firmware Update 1A291e

Apple has released a second revision of its latest AirTags firmware update. The initial one arrived in August, but we’ve seen revisions ever since.

The latest version carries the build number 1A291e, a change from 1A291c that was assigned to the previous iteration.

We have no idea what changed in this latest release because Apple doesn’t offer any information itself, although it’s likely that bug fixes and improvements to detection are being made beneath the service. It’s highly unlikely that most people will notice a change in the way their AirTags behave.

Interestingly, MacRumors notes that Apple seems to be limiting how its AirTag firmware is rolled out.

For AirTag firmware releases, Apple appears to have a system that limits the number of people who see the update with each deployment to meter the rollout of the software. Today’s firmware update jumps to a 25 percent rollout level, up from 10 percent with the prior version of the firmware.

Users cannot initiate an AirTag firmware update manually. Instead, the updates are handled automatically whenever an AirTag is in range of an iPhone. The system works in much the same way as AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max receive their own updates.
