Apple has been rumored to have plans to bring touchscreens to the Mac for years and the Face ID authentication technology has been a topic of discussion since the new MacBook Pro announcement saw a notch introduced to the lineup. However, it doesn’t seem like either will come to the Mac soon.
Speaking with the Wall Street Journal, Apple execs including John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering, had their say.
“We make the world’s best touch computer on an iPad. It’s totally optimized for that. And the Mac is totally optimized for indirect input. We haven’t really felt a reason to change that.”
In terms of Face ID, Tom Goger, Apple VP of Mac and iPad product marketing, pointed to the ergonimics of a Mac when saying that Touch ID is the better option. “Touch ID is more convenient on a laptop since your hands are already on the keyboard,” he reportedly said.
Both points make sense and it seems unlikely that Apple will back down on either a touch-based Mac or a Face ID addition soon.
However, Apple has been known to bluff before and we wouldn’t take all of this as any indication that these two features will never happen. Just perhaps don’t expect them to be part of the next round of Mac refreshes.
