Apple has today seeded macOS 12.1 beta 4 to developers, with this release arriving two whole weeks after the last version was released.
It also arrives a month after the first macOS 12.1 beta was released, too. Those who are registered as developers can now download the update via the System Preferences app on their Macs.
The beta is available via the usual Software Update system that non-beta updates are delivered via so long as the required profile has been installed.
The main addition to macOS 12.1 will be the addition of SharePlay, something that has already been made available for other devices including iPhones and iPads.
SharePlay’s first foray onto the Mac will allow people to watch TV, play games, and more via FaceTime with multiple friends simultaneously. Apps will need to be updated to take advantage of the SharePlay feature, however. A SharePlay API is now available to help that happen.
There is currently no indication of when we can expect macOS 12.1 to be made available to everyone, but we don’t expect it to be too far into the future. Apple has already released iOS 15.1, iPadOS 15.1, and tvOS 15.1 with support for SharePlay thrown in. It’ll surely want macOS to have feature parity sooner rather than later.
