Tesla’s Latest Software Update Enables In-Car Purchases And Subscriptions

Tesla has begun to enable in-car purchases and subscriptions via its latest round of software updates, giving drivers the chance to give it more money for things like the Premium Connectivity Subscription and more.

Previously, car owners had to sign into their Tesla accounts via the Tesla website when buying things like Full Self-Driving, for example. Now, that’s changing as people have begun to notice.

Interestingly, Tesla doesn’t seem to have mentioned the change in its software update release notes, but the change is definitely live.

The new subscriptions and purchases are available via a new Upgrades tab in the Tesla in-car menu system. However, as Electrek notes, it seems that there is only one thing that can be bought in-car right now.

For now, it appears that only the Premium Connectivity Subscription is available through the in-car purchase system despite other upgrades, like Full Self-Driving package, being available through the app if you haven’t already bought them.

Expect to see Tesla enabling more subscriptions and purchases in due course. It isn’t clear what kind of authentication is required in order to make a purchase, however, with a photo shared to Reddit simply showing a “Swipe to subscribe” button. Presumably, there is a mechanism in place to prevent accidental or fraudulent purchases.
