WhatsApp Adds Disappearing Messages As Default Option Along With Multiple Durations Feature

Those who use WhatsApp can now take advantage of a feature change that allows them to set disappearing messages as the default option for new one-on-one chats.

WhatsApp made the announcement via a blog post earlier today. Disappearing messages are great for people who don’t want their messages to be available forever for whatever reason.

While WhatsApp has offered disappearing messages for a while, this is the first time that it has allowed people to set that as the default option. However, the change doesn’t apply to group chats.

WhatsApp users will now have the option to turn on disappearing messages by default for all new chats. When enabled, all new one-on-one chats you or another person start will be set to disappear at your chosen duration, and we’ve added a new option when creating a group chat that lets you turn it on for groups you create. This new feature is optional and does not change or delete any of your existing chats.

WhatsApp has also added 24-hour and 90-day disappearing timelines to its disappearing messages. Previously, messages disappeared after seven days but the two new options give people more flexibility than ever before.

Those looking to change the default option should head into the app’s privacy settings before choosing the ‘Default Message Timer’ option, WhatsApp says.
