Apple has today added two of its most iconic products to the vintage and obsolete lists which means that getting support for them is now more difficult than it was before.
The first of the two products is the iPhone 6 Plus, the iPhone that brought us the first Plus device and joined the iPhone 6 in being launched in September of 2014.
The iPhone 6 Plus is now classed as vintage by Apple, meaning it was last sold more than five years ago but less than seven years ago. Things are slightly different in France, however, thanks to local laws relating to repairs and warranties.
For products purchased in France, see Statutory Warranties of Seller and Spare Parts. Owners of new iPhone or Mac notebook products purchased after December 31, 2020 in France, may obtain service and parts from Apple or Apple service providers for 7 years from the date the product model was last supplied by Apple for distribution into France.
The iPhone 6 Plus was the first iPhone to support Apple Pay and was a popular device despite its performance issues.
Apple has also now added the fourth-generation iPad to the obsolete list. That device was the first iPad to use the Lightning connector and arrived just after the iPhone 5 brought that connector to the iPhone lineup. Here’s how Apple describes its obsolete products:
Products are considered obsolete when Apple stopped distributing them for sale more than 7 years ago. Monster-branded Beats products are considered obsolete regardless of when they were purchased.
Apple discontinues all hardware service for obsolete products, with the sole exception of Mac notebooks that are eligible for an additional battery-only repair period. Service providers cannot order parts for obsolete products.
Apple has also added the Mid-2010 and Late 2012 Mac mini to the same obsolete list, too.
