Apple’s iPhone screen production has been hit by an ongoing shortage of driver chips that are required for the finished displays to be built.
A new report suggests that the shortage will continue to affect Apple’s production through the rest of February and into March.
According to a report by The Elec, at least one of the companies that provided OLED displays for iPhones has been hit by a shortage of drivers, potentially causing problems for Apple. The company currently uses Samsung, LG, and BOE as suppliers for those screens.
The Chinese display giant internally had aimed to ship over 40 million units of OLED panels for iPhones this year, another group of people familiar with the matter said. It is unlikely that they will meet this target now and its ultimate shipment numbers will more close to 30 million units by the end of the year.
It isn’t known when this will hit Apple in terms of stocks on shelves, but a shortage of display drivers could mean that buying an iPhone 13 device is more difficult in the next few months than Apple would have liked.
Hopefully things will be back in line with the norm before it’s time to begin producing the iPhone 14 devices ahead of an expected September launch.
