If you've ever scoffed to the max at the designs of new Pokemon and have dreams of creating your own pocket monsters without having to do too much work, we have good news. Using the power of the internet and unholy algorithms, you can create your very own Pokemon by simply typing in a word and letting your PC do all the hard work.
You can try it out for yourself on the website Text-To-Pokemon, but be warned: Once you've created your own custom critter and have seen it you can never unsee it. Due to the random nature of the results, a lot of the generated custom Pokemon will be the stuff of nightmares, but you'll occasionally create something that looks remarkably authentic.
In the interest of science and finding a valid excuse to not get any work done today, the GameSpot staff has started throwing names and random words into the AI art widget, and you can gaze in horror at the results below.
The end results bear a striking resemblance to The Pokemon Company's in-house style for creating its trademark critters, with each generated image featuring artistic quirks similar to the work of original Pokemon illustrator Ken Sugimori. This particular AI model was designed by machine learning researcher Justin Pinkney and is adapted from the art generator named Stable Diffusion. An open-source engine, Pinkney's modifications of the system and the use of a Pokemon database resulted in the birth of this tool.
