Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Trailer Breakdown

A new trailer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has arrived, and guess what? It still looks fantastic. Much like the last trailer, we're still left with quite a bit of mystery surrounding the film. But we did learn a few more things.

We got a better look at the movie's villain, Namor. We learned more about what happened to T'Challa. We got our first look at Riri Williams, who comic fans know as Iron Heart. Oh yeah, the trailer closed out with a better look at someone in the Black Panther suit.

Digging deeper into world of Marvel Comics--and Wakanda for that matter--we found some pretty cool Easter eggs and references in the trailer. More importantly, we have a good idea of where the film will be headed and what we can expect to see--although we still don't know who is under the Black Panther helmet.

Wakanda Forever is directed once again by Ryan Coogler. Angela Bassett, Letitia Wright, Danai Gurira, Lupita Nyong'o, Winston Duke, and Martin Freeman will return to reprise their roles from the previous movie. The Black Panther sequel also adds Tenoch Huerta, Dominique Thorne, and Mabel Cadena to its cast.

Check out the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever breakdown below, and be patient as we all wait for it to hit theaters on November 11.

Black Panther's helmet

There was a lot of speculation as to what happened to T'Challa. He's not being recast, following the passing of Chadwick Boseman. It feels like his helmet getting carried off by his mother and someone else is them saying goodbye. In an issue of the Mighty Avengers, we do catch a quick glimpse of Wakandan funeral garb, and wearing white seems to be something everyone wears when someone they love dies.

Namor

There's already been some alluding to Atlantis in previous MCU movies, and here, we get to see Namor: The Sub-Mariner--played by Tenoch Huerta. As you can see, the look of Atlanteans--and their art--pulls from ancient Mexican/Central American civilizations, with the most notable of these tribes being Olmec, Mayan, and Aztec.

Depending on what may or may not have changed in the comics--it's hard to keep up sometimes--Namor is one of the first mutants (Apocalypse being the very first). He's the leader of Atlantis, and was one of the very first Marvel villains. He's a hybrid of a human and Atlantean--that's why he doesn't have blue skin.

Yes, you can translate this writing

So much like the Star Wars language, Aurebesh, Wakandan is essentially written in English but the alphabet is replaced with different letters. While some of the writing on this poster is hidden, here is what we can translate. "The Panther King Forever lives in us and [blocked] the [blocked]."

So all signs are definitely pointing to T'Challa passing away.

More Namor

There's nothing really huge to breakdown here, but we should all just take a minute to really take in the design for Namor. It is breathtaking--and not just because he's underwater… I'll see myself out. Sorry.

Empty throne

After seeing Okoye crying, there's an empty throne. Again, more very specific signs to T'Challa passing away. So who will take over as the King or Queen or Wakanda? Just as importantly, who will be the Black Panther?

Enviro+

If there's anything we've learned from Marvel Comics, it's that companies often pretend they're doing good when they're actually trying to dominate the world. Is that what this tanker is doing? Regardless, they've made Atlanteans mad, and now, they're crawling all over the ship.

How Namor flies

This is something many Marvel fans tend to forget about, since it's so weird. On Namor's ankles, he has little wings that help him fly. And yes, they're being included in the MCU version of the character.

War!

As you can see from this very blurry picture above, there is going to be a gigantic conflict--even war--between the Wakandans and the Atlanteans--most of whom have blue skin. This will more-than-likely be the central focus of the movie.

Someone is in Iron Man armor

Ok, so it's probably not an actual Iron Man armor. It's tough to tell from this shot, but it's most likely Riri Williams, also known as Ironheart. Played by Dominique Thorne. She's a teenage genius who crafted her own flying armor, which we saw a bit of in the first trailer for this movie.

The flooding of Wakanda

Wakanda is not on the African coast. It's nestled between Kenya and Uganda in the MCU. However, in the comics, when Atlantis waged war on Wakanda and flooded the country in the storyline Avengers vs. X-Men. So it looks like that subplot from the comics event will be a big focus of this movie.

Riri is building

We catch a quick glimpse of Riri crafting her armor. Again, she's a genius, so even as a teenager, this is easy-peasy for her.

Riri's armor

This is probably the best shot we get of Riri in her armor. She stumbles a bit getting into the air, but seems to adjust to being a superhero pretty easy. Her armor doesn't seem as form-fitting as Tony's suits did. Hers comes off a bit more bulk, which makes it a little more menacing-looking.

Breathing on land

While Namor is a hybrid--so he can breathe on land--other Atlanteans need a little help when leaving the ocean. Here, you can see an Atlantean with a mask on his mouth and nose, that is presumably filled with water, so he can breathe.

Here's Nakia

We don't see a lot of Nakia (Lupita Nyong'o) in the trailer. This is the best shot of her. Like many of her friends, she's most likely struggling with the loss of her love, T'Challa. We're really hoping she's the one under the Black Panther mask.

Inside Ironheart

Much like Tony Stark in Iron Man, Riri will have her own heads up display, and we'll get to see shots of her face and she reacts to the action around her while flying around in the suit.

Black Panther

This is the second time we get to see someone wearing the Black Panther suit, but this time, we have a better idea of who it can be. It's a woman carrying the mantle now. It could be Nakia, Okoye, Shuri, or even T'Challa's mother Ramonda. More than likely, it's Shuri though, based on a recent poster for the movie.
