Despite initially receiving positive reviews from everyone who picked one up, some people are now reporting that the new iPad mini might have some problems we weren’t aware of.
The talk of jelly scrolling issues has begun to die down, but now there’s a new problem — LCD distortion.
As shown in a growing Reddit thread, a number of people are reporting issues that cause their iPad mini’s display to react oddly when tapped — a gesture that people do regularly! Worryingly, replacing the iPad mini with a new model doesn’t necessarily fix anything, although it isn’t clear just how widespread this is right now.
I got my 64gb Wi-Fi iPad Mini 6 just about a week ago and noticed that there seems to be an LCD clearance issue – if you put your mini in vertical orientation (with the power button on the top right) push very lightly on the screen and you will see distortion and discoloration about an inch down and in from the top right. On most models this will happen in three spots along the top of the display (when vertical).
While it’s to be expected that pressing firmly on any LCD screen could cause discoloration around the point of impact, that isn’t what this video shows. Instead, the issue pops up elsewhere on the screen.
An Apple Store employee reportedly told one individual that they wouldn’t be surprised if Apple issued a recall, although that seems highly unlikely at this point.
